Facing several injuries to main contributors, Liberty Union called upon its younger core of reserves to step up against a tough conference opponent in Fairfield Union on Saturday morning at Liberty Union Middle School. Freshman Matt Gygi, Ashton Wilson, and Jon Wheeler all saw major minutes and played well to help LU earn a point within the MSL conference.
There was no scoring in the first half as both teams battled to maintain possession from the other on a very muddy field. Liberty Union would actually outshoot Fairfield 4-3 in a very even first half.
The second half was much different, as Fairfield began maintaining long stretches of possession in Liberty Union’s half of the field. Wheeler would make several key saves to keep a 0-0 tie. With 20 minutes remaining, junior centerback Aaron Basso went forward on a daring run and struck a volley into the top right corner to give LU a 1-0 lead.
LU would try to hang on to their lead by staying organized and trying to counter attack in transition. However Fairfield Union senior Bodie Hammock slipped through LU’s backline and calmly finished a shot into the right side netting to tie the game with 5 minutes remaining.
The game would end with a 1-1 draw. LU’s shorthanded center midfield: senior Travis Wilson, junior Chance Wolffel, and freshman Gavin Eastep would play the entire 80 minutes without subbing. LU’s freshman GK Jon Wheeler ended the game with 12 saves. Fairfield Union’s senior GK Tyler McClellen ended the game with 6 saves.
The 7-4-1 LU Lions will face conference rival Amanda Clearcreek at Amanda at 5:30 on Wednesday.
