The Liberty Union Lions fought their way to a 10-9 win in their final league game of the year over the Fairfield Union Falcons. After being shutout by the Falcons on Tuesday, the Lions bounced back to score ten runs on fifteen hits.
Caleb Peck had an incredible night going 5 for 5 with a double, drove in three runs, scored twice, and picked up the win in relief. Peck took over on the hill in the sixth retiring all three hitters he faced, though a pair of runners inherited scored to tie the game at 9-9. With two out in the sixth, Peck singled home Brody Poston who reached on an error and moved to second on a Jacob Berlekamp walk to put the Lions up 10-9. Ben Miller picked up his fourth hit of the night with a single to start the Falcons seventh. He stole second, but was eliminated when James Troup’s sacrifice attempt was popped into the air. Peck dove and caught the ball just before it hit the ground, got up onto one knee and threw Mller out at second to complete the double play. However, that would not be the last threat by the Falcons as Peck then walked the bases loaded and gave way to freshman Jacob Berlekamp. Berlekamp threw one pitch to Derek Buckalew who hit it high to straight away center field where senior Noah Graf secured the ball and the victory for the Lions.
The Lions scored three times in the first with singles by Brody Poston, Caleb Peck, and the aid of three Falcons errors. Fairfield Union got one back in the second with leadoff singles by Tylor Wolfe and Miller. A one out ground out by Troup scored the run. The Lions made it 4-1 when Berlekamp singled home Austin Young with two outs. Young opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Trey Henry reached on a one out error in the third. Buckalew singled and a sacrifice foul fly was caught by Nick Congrove to make it 4-2. A wild pitch scored another run to make it 4-3. The Falcons grabbed their first lead in the fourth. Wolfe singled and Miller doubled him home going to third on the throw home to get Wolfe. Miller scored on a Troup ground out to make it 5-4 Falcons. That lead was short lived as the Lions scored four times in their half to go up 8-5. The first four batters of the inning, Poston, Berlekamp, Peck, and Congrove singled. Congrove’s hit was on a squeeze play. With runners at second and third, Cy Putnam hit a grounder that the pitcher froze to make a play and he reached on an infield single. Peyton Wilson singled to make it 7-5 as his grounder left of third just squeaked past the Falcons third sacker. Austin Young got a squeeze bunt down and he reached when the Falcons first baseman failed to step on the bag before he got there giving the Lions an 8-5 lead. The Falcons were not through. With two out and a runner on second, Ben Miller struck again, this time a run scoring double. He later scored when Ethan Hyme’s bunt back to the mound was bobbled then thrown past Peck at first. That made it 8-7. In the Lions fifth, Peck doubled with one out and a pair of walks to Congrove and Dylan Anthony loaded the bases. Hunter Putnam came onto run for Peck and was thrown out stealing home. However, his cousin Cy Putnam singled to make it 9-7. Justin Fletcher gave up a pair of singles to open the sixth bringing Peck to the mound. He retired all three he faced, but not before a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly tied the game.
Peck collected his second win of the year in as many appearances after rehabbing some shoulder issues most of the season. Berlekamp threw one pitch to pick-up his first career save. He also went 2 for 3, scored twice, and drove in a run. Brody Poston went 2 for 5 and scored three runs.
