acob Berlecamp pitched six shutout innings to lead the Liberty Union Lions to a 3-1 win over the Aces of Amanda Clearcreek. Berlecamp, a freshman, walked two and struck out six in his first varsity start to earn the first win of his high school career.
The Lions got all they would need off of Seth Lockard. The Lions collected five hits and three runs in the opening inning. Freshman second baseman Brody Poston singled and one out later went to third on Caleb Pecks bunt single. After Peck stole second, Cy Putnam singled home the first run of the game. With two out, Austin Young singled to score Peck to make it 2-0. With runners at first and second, Luke Slone singled to center for another two-out RBI and the Lions were off and running. However, Lockard starting locking down the Lions offense allowing just three Lions hits the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, Berlecamp kept working out of jams throughout the game. He never retired the side in order on the night, but he did have an inning where he struck out the side. Nick Congrove took over in the sixth. After retiring the first two batters he faced, he walked Harbor and then West hit for Simpson and singled to center field. Hayes collected his second hit of the night to score Harbor to make it 3-1. After Hayes took second on no throw, Congrove struck out Madison to end the inning.
The Lions threatened in the bottom of the sixth but a foiled squeeze play attempt was turned into an inning ending double play. In the bottom half, Congrove retired Bennett on a fly to center field but allowed a single to Marshall. Congrove retired the next to hitters on pop ups to end the game and pick up his third save of the season.
