Liberty Union’s football season came to a close Saturday night, as the Lions fell on the road to Wheelersburg 42-3 in their Division V, Region 17 playoff opener. The Pirates got out to a quick start scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions. Liberty Union briefly grabbed momentum before the half off a Tyler Makuch interception. Adam Snyder hit Luke Bressler on a 51-yard pass off a fake punt on the ensuing possession that set the Lions up at the Wheelersburg 6-yard line. Liberty Union settled for a Chris Scalf 24-yard field goal and trailed 14-3 at the half. Wheelersburg would close the game with 28 unanswered points in the second half.
Despite the loss, this team will be remembered as the first team in school history to reach the playoffs in three consecutive years. Over the last four years this class of seniors have led the Lions to a 31-9 regular season record, and a 4-3 record in the post season which included a berth in the state semifinal in 2012. All of us at Liberty Union are extremely proud of what our football program has accomplished these past few years.
